Screen reader user's note
This mode adjusts various settings to make it easier for screen reader users to navigate book contents. It enlarges the text size
significantly and uses a scrolling view, so you can read one chapter at a time without having to turn pages.
It also introduces an action menu dialog that you trigger by pressing the space bar, return key or double tapping on the screen.
This dialog makes it easy to find and trigger any action, such as showing the table of contents, or adding a bookmark. It also helps
the Vanilla Reader get information about the current position of the screen reader's focus to let it better position you within the
books contents.

Note to screen reader users
For a good reading experience you may want to use the Alt + Z / Ctrl + Option + Z shortcut to enter
into the screen reader accessibility preset mode. This mode is simply a reading configuration that uses
the scroll renderer, increases the text font size and turns off unnecessary animations. In this mode,
the Read Aloud controls are also active. These controls let you use the built-in Colibrio
Text to Speech functionality. This will handle all navigation, so you can just listen to your book without
care.
While in Accessibility Mode, tapping / clicking the screen the App Actions dialog is opened. In this dialog you can
choose and perform any of actions available in the app UI.
Also, if you are using NVDA note that in system UI, such as dialogs and menus, you should use focus mode.
Note on reading controls
In order for Colibrio to properly determine where the screen reader is focused, we recommend that you use
the "Actions" menu to complete actions such as bookmarking, highlighting etc. You access this menu when
in accessibility mode by either double tapping on a touch screen, or by pressing the space bar on a computer.
You can also choose to read one object (paragraph, heading or section) at a time. Using this reading
method bookmarks, highlights and so much more will work well.
If you just want to listen continuously, without pressing keyboard buttons to move through the text, we
recommend using our build in Text to Speech (Alt + R). When you stop the built-in TTS (Alt + Shift + R),
we will try to focus the screen reader as close as possible to the current reading position.
Tip
To put focus back to the book contents you can always press,
Control + Alt + X / Control + Option + X
Android specifics
To navigate to the next or previous you can swipe left or right using two fingers.
About
The Vanilla Reader is a demo implementation of the Colibrio Reader Framework that uses only "vanilla"
HTML and CSS. In other words it uses none of those fancy pants JS frameworks that mess up accessibility.
